The Sootmaster 641M is purpose-built for chimney sweeps and HVAC contractors who clean solid-fuel heating systems — chimneys, boilers, flue pipes, and fireboxes — as a core part of their service work. Using a general-purpose vacuum for soot creates cross-contamination problems and accelerates motor wear from fine carbon particulate. The 641M eliminates that risk with a dedicated 1 HP motor, 94 CFM airflow, and a detachable cold-rolled steel tank sized for efficient ash disposal. The 3.5-gallon detachable steel tank is the central feature for professionals: when it's full, it lifts out of the base, seals, and can be transported directly to a disposal point without secondary transfer. The primary difference is tank capacity: the 641M has a 3.5-gallon (0.5 bushel) steel tank suited for residential chimney sweeping and lighter-volume work, while the 652M has a 5.25-gallon (0.75 bushel) steel tank designed for higher-volume commercial jobs such as industrial boiler maintenance and multi-flue HVAC cleaning. If you are servicing multiple appliances per visit, the 652M reduces the frequency of emptying.
No. The SootMaster uses a 14" cloth filter and disposable paper filter bag system. It is engineered specifically for soot, ash, and carbon residue from combustion systems — materials that are heavy and fall out of suspension quickly. For jobs involving regulated fine particulate such as asbestos or lead dust, use an Enviromaster® Critical HEPA vacuum instead.
No. The SootMaster is designed for cooled soot and ash residue only. Never vacuum hot embers, live ash, or any material above ambient temperature — doing so creates a fire and explosion hazard and will damage the vacuum. Always allow ash and residue to cool completely (typically 24 hours for fireplaces and wood stoves) before vacuuming. Both the 641M and 652M use 14" cloth filters and compatible paper filter bags (available in 5-packs). Replace the paper bag when approximately two-thirds full to maintain suction. Inspect and clean the cloth filter after every 5–10 uses, and replace it when tears, holes, or heavy residue buildup are visible.
The 652M is UL Listed for safety compliance. Both models are manufactured to the same quality standards. Check your local and state regulatory requirements to confirm which certification is required for your jurisdiction or contracting work.
After each use, remove and empty the steel tank, wipe the interior clean before residue cools and hardens, and inspect the cloth filter for tears or buildup. Store with the tank empty and lid unsealed to prevent odor buildup. Inspect hose connections and rubber lining for cracks before each job. For commercial service work, Mastercraft® recommends starting each job with a fresh paper bag to document clean filtration.
